Monthly 'Who Is Hiring' Thread Parser
Turn the monthly Hacker News 'Who is hiring?' thread into a searchable table of roles, locations, remote options and salaries, with alerts for new matches.
Economics
- Pricing example
- Free to search the current month; $5/month for saved-search alerts and past months
- Daily math
- 120 subscribers x $5/month = $600/month, about $20/day.
- Target if you hit the daily math
- Target: $600 / month at 120 subscribers
Audience and urgency
Audience: Developers and designers looking for startup roles, and dev-focused recruiters tracking which startups are hiring.
Urgency: The monthly thread has hundreds of free-text posts. Scrolling it for 'remote, Asia time zone, React' takes an hour, and new posts keep arriving through the month.
MVP scope
- ✓ Fetch the monthly thread and its top-level comments through the official Hacker News API
- ✓ Extract company, role, location, remote/onsite, visa and salary fields (code rules first, LLM fallback), always linking the original comment
- ✓ Search and filters by keyword, remote, region and salary mentioned
- ✓ Saved searches with email alerts for new matching comments
- ✓ Stripe subscription for alerts and past months
Omitted features
- - Do NOT republish full posts elsewhere or as a separate job board
- - Do NOT contact posters or collect their personal details
- - Do NOT scrape the external job pages linked in posts

- Backend or API
- Scheduled function polling the official HN Firebase API + Postgres; small LLM call for unstructured posts

One-shot master prompt
Build a "Who Is Hiring Parser" with Next.js, Tailwind CSS, Postgres and a scheduled function.
Core requirements:
1. Find the monthly thread via the official API (GET /v0/user/whoishiring.json, then check submitted items for titles starting "Ask HN: Who is hiring?") and fetch its top-level comments (/v0/item/{id}.json), refreshing hourly.
2. Parse each comment: split the first line on "|" for company, role, location, remote, salary; detect REMOTE/ONSITE/VISA keywords; use an LLM with a JSON schema only when rules fail. Store the comment id, parsed fields and the time posted, and link back to the original comment.
3. Search UI with keyword search and filters (remote, region, salary mentioned, role type), sorted by newest.
4. Saved searches with daily email alerts for new matching comments (Resend).
5. Free: current month search. Stripe Billing ($5/month) unlocks alerts and the archive of past months.Comparable products
